This New Balance sneaker caught my attention with it’s wood effect outsole and I felt it really cemented the ‘craft and timeless’ trend of using wood and natural materials, and going back to our roots. I have seen wood used throughout footwear and accessories and I predict this will be a ss 12 trend in lighter colours, but darker wood effects will continue through a transistional period from ss 12 to aw 12. I think we need to use more innovative ways of using wood, rather than just a clog style, and take inspiraiton like the heel counter’s found on Balenciaga’s block platforms. Cecilia Paredes is renown for her performance, photography, sculpture and installation. Using her body as canvas, she paints herself into backgrounds of damask and chintz, forests and deserts. But she never completely blends —-never becomes mere decoration.
Paredes is a part of the permanent collection of the San Antonio Museum of Art, the Panama Modern Museum, Museo del Barrio New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design Costa Rica among many other institutions. In 2010 she will have a a solo show at the Moscow Modern Museum of Art and a Fulbright sponsored show at the Cultural Institute in Lima
However, I don’t feel this is a clear message to brands, in how to manage the changes in consumer behaviour, so I eagerly await tomorrow’s newsletter.
Being a consultant to footwear brands means I also have to understand the end user’s behaviour in order to advise on business strategies as well as design strategies.
I am going to check out the article tomorrow so click on this link here to read more

They are not slippery at all, and they are probably somewhat water resistant>>.
I suppose this is two stories in one. I wanted to show you my vintage shoe find in Oxfam in York City Centre, England. Camel and points sprung to mind, and this pair seemed to have stood the test of time and looked classy and timeless. I find it difficult sometimes to really find nice shaped lasts and respectable looking shoes in charity shops. It might be because I am fussy about the shoes that inspire me from vintage shopping. (By the way if anyone has any better avenues for Vintage shoe shopping and inspiration then please let me know.)
Around the corner on Fossgate I took a double take and saw these shoes mingling with designer labels in a shop called Sonia’s Room Dress Agency. I immediately thought back to the find in Oxfam and any of you canny fashionista’s would definitely not look out of place in these ‘on trend’ point shoes.
Furthermore if you are feeling the pinch and you prefer to shop at dress agencies, there can be some great bargains to find. Dress agencies sell quality, unwanted clothes for a fraction of the original price for those with a taste for expensive designer gear. They make environmental sense too.
So there is some true inspiration to be found by delving deep in charity shops and dress agencies
Note to self: Find more dress agencies to fuel my shopping habit and pay less for timeless classics.

Melanie Harper’s boots caught my eye as she was browsing in ‘House of Fraser’, Huddersfield, England. I thought her style looked individual and I loved her red beret. The boots had a textile panel at the centre back and even though she worried about ‘paint splashes’ on them, it all became clear when she explained she was studying a Textiles degree at Huddersfield University.
Her boots were from an independent called ‘Pixie Pop & Posh’ in Huddersfield about 2 years ago. I accept the textile pattern might not appeal to the mass, but it could be replaced with a tonal heavy slub canvas to keep up with a more timeless and classic trend.
Maybe even a pleat for those ladies with wider shins?
Note to self: Must visit this shop.
Note to High Street Chain Stores: Please have the confidence to create something that little bit different
